The race takes place on the “Monster Mile” stretch of the Green River Narrows, just outside of Saluda, NC. This stretch of the river got its name from having eleven class V-V+ rapids in half a mile. Three companies designed kayaks especially for the GreenRace. Dagger created the “Green Boat,” Liquid Logic designed “The Remix 100%,” also known as, “The Hungee” and WaveSport created the “Momentum.” The winner of the race, Andrew Holcombe paddled “The Green Boaf ’ with a time of 4 minutes, 27 seconds. Several people from Brevard College also competed, including Brevard Alum, Tommy Hilike, who has won the race six times. Will Lyons placed 36*’ with a time of 5 minutes, 8 seconds, Brian Douglas placed 4P*’ with a time of 5 minutes, 11 seconds and John Shannon placed 54**^ with a time of 5 minuntes, 21 seconds. Due to the drought this year, the water level was dangerously low at 6" to 6.5.” This caused many racers to question if it was worth racing or not. Brevard College Alum, Sarah Bell who owns Green River Adventures in Saluda, NC talked to Duke Power to see if they would have a larger dam release than usual for the race. Duke Power agreed to release 2 units at 60%, making for nearly perfect race conditions. The race is held on the first Saturday of every November at high noon. photo courtesy C. Jordan President responds to Tom Collins interview Editor’s note; Brevard College President Drew Van Horn requested that The Clarion print the following response to the interview with former Athletics DirectorTom Collins in last week’s issue. While I appreciate Mr Colhns’ recognition of the legitimacy of the actions I was forced to take, I would like to clarify several issues mentioned in the recent article so that the campus will have more information regarding recent events. Mr Collins indicates that the administration was responsible for the termination of the former head football coach. In fact, Mr Collins recommended this action to me for my consideration and approval based on his evaluation and conviction and then handled the dismissal personally. At no time have I or the administration indicated that any area on our campus is more responsible for enrollment projections than others, that is, no one has been considered a “scapegoat.” We have, and always will, work together as a campus to continue to enhance the enrollment and retention goals of the College.
